Day 3 : walking in the rain

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

Hi, dear reader, nice to see you here !
Today was tough... when i woke up, i could hear the rain outside and i immediately wished it was a nightmare and that i would wake up for good and heard the birds singing... but nothing happened, it was the reality and my adventure in Beijing would start under the rain *insert huge sight here*

Ok, with such a weather, in order not to ruin my camera with the rain, i decided i would visit the aquarium which seems to be fantastic (and i love aquariums) . the only problem i had was that i didn't realize how far it was !!! (only) 2 metro stations between my hotel and the aquarium, but it took me almost 2 hours to get there !!!! it's in the middle of roads we would consider as highways, and of course, i couldn't find the entrance gate. I sked several people, and let me tell you that next time i see some chinese people lost in Montpellier, i won't try to help him/her. When the people here see you arriving with a map, they look terrified or they eve do as if they didn't see you, even if you're talking to them. So nice, thanks !
Those who answer do not really help you neither as they are showing you several directions, once on the left, once on the right and look satisfied of their answer... well... it did help at all, but thanks anyway for trying. In Montpellier, i have helped tourist without words just showing them on a map where they were and the road to the place they wanted to go to, but here in Beijing, nobody can't read maps.
I was a bout to give up and go back to the ceter of Beijing when I arrive at the gate of the aquarium. Greaaaat gate, with a lot of steps, a statue, columns and much more to impress the world. Then you have to face the cruel reality once again : the price you tried to get on internet and didn't find is here, written in bold letters : 120 RMB (the equivalent of 40 metro tickets, or 120 bus tickets)... it must be the most expensive attraction in the town but after 2 hours walking in the rain, ok, let's go ! i didn't regret it as there were a lot of fishes i didn't know (some huge ones seemed to be arriving from the past, some others were just strange with big cheeks), just one thing i missed : i didn't have enough of jellyfishes ! they are amazing and there was only one small tank with small jellyfishes. I have taken a lot of pictures but i won't be able to show them for the moment as the blonde inside me forgot the cable to transfer the pictures for my CF card to the computer *insert laughs here* i'll see tomorrow if someone in the group can let me use his/hers of if need to buy one (in china, it shouldn't be difficult to find that).
After my visit at the aquarium, i discovered that my ticket also allowed me to visit the zoo, even if a small fee - 5RMB - was required to see the pandas. I saw some amazing white tigers, a couple of lions, a black panther, lynxes, and many others.
After that, I took the bus to the town center (it took more than 1/2 an hour!!) and headed to the north to go back to the hotel. On my way, i stopped in a supermarket in a traditional building to see how it was and after the cashier desk, there were some food and people eating there... and do know what ? I tried it too. It's simple you look at what you want, then you have to tell a woman what you want, you pay and she gives you a ticket, you give the ticket to a cook and he prepares your meal. A kind lady offered me a spoon thinking i wouldn't manage to eat with their traditional guns, but i did it ! i finished my plate without the spoon ! *me proud* It was good, in large quantity and i only paid 4.50RMB. I will remember the address for sure!!

The day I took 332 pictures

Tuesday, September 18th, 2007

I'm a pictures addict, but I think I've never taken so many pictures. Today started early because some of my roomates woke up at 7.00 and then I did the same.
I started with a church close from my hotel (the Christian Science Church), then Trinity Church, then I went to Boston Commons (the park) and followed again the Freedom Trail. This time I did it all, from Boston Commons to Bunker Hill And the USS Constitution. Here's the whole list: the State House, Park Church, Old Granary Burial Ground, King's Chapel, the Old Corner Bookstore, the Old State House (I did visit it, but it was forbidden to take pictures), the Boston Massacre site, Faneuil Hall Marketplace, the memorial for the victims of World War II (I know it's not in the Freedom Trail, but I saw it anyway), Paul Revere's House (did visit it too, no pictures again!!! the house is so old, simple and nice), Old North Church, Copp's Hill Burying Ground, Bunker Hill (294 steps to get to the top, without lift to have a wonderful view on Boston) and the USS Constitution (did visit it too, and also the Cassin Young, another - and more recent - navy boat). All this was a very long walk but I finished visiting the Cassin Young around 1.30pm, wich allowed me to do other things: I went to the aquarium because I could get my ticket for a short cruise in the harbor. Instead of waiting stupidly 45min for the next cruise, I decided to take the time to visit the aquarium before and took a ticket for the 3.30pm cruise.
The aquarium is small but great. I took a lot of pictures there (like in all the other places today).
The cruise was fun too but the sun wasn't on the right side to take pictures. You know what? Boston is small!! I shouldn't have come here after NY!!!
I went to the Science Museum to get a ticket for the "Boston Duck Tour", a fun tour of the city by car, but it was already too late: almost everything ends at 5.00pm here in Boston!!! It's incredible!
After this, I went back to the hostel, had something for dinner and went to the top of the Prudential Center , and guess what? It was open today!! It was already the night and the town is just wonderful with all its lights!
Now, I let you because I really need to sleep.

The day I saw the blue sky above NY

Wednesday, September 12th, 2007

Big surprise today: the sky is blue!!!!! I can't believe it as it was still grey and raining yesterday. Well, I'll change my plans for today. Yesterday evening I took a ticket for the Empire State building (just in case) and it just seems I'll use it today.

I left the hotel at 8.30 and arrived at the ESB before  9.00am, wich was a brilliant idea because I didn't wait at all: thanks to my NY pass I got my ticket from the news stand yesterday and didn't have to wait for it, then today I skipped the ticket line (more than 50 people were waiting). I didn't wait neither at the security check (a local specialty), didn't wait for the 1st lift. We stopped at the 80th floor, wich looked ugly because they are revamping it (you cannot enven reach the windows to see outside). Then I took another lift and of course, I didn't wait. When I went out of the lift, I had a breathtaking view on NY. Everything looks soooo small from here!!! It's fabulous! And with the blue sky it's really per-fect. It took me a while to start taking pictures because I didn't know what to start with. You can see a picture of South Manhattan, where I'll go tomorrow.
When I decided to go away, I suddenly noticed that it was a good idea to wake up early: the lines for the lift was so long! and I didn't see the one for the tickets, but it was certainly even longer.

When I was at the top of the ESB, I was a little cold (i didn't notice the air had cooled in the night) and I was almost sure I would be very cold on the boat to Liberty Statue & Ellis Island. Once again, I changed my plans and headed to the City Hall, thinking that I would go to the WTC after. But when I got there, I saw it... my bridge... Brooklyn bridge. I couldn't resist... I started walking and crossed it and arrived in Brooklyn. The bridge is gorgeous and the view from it is amazing. (you have some pictures of both).

In Brooklyn, I did visit the NY  City Transit Museum, Brooklyn Museum, the Botanic Garden and the Aquarium (which was much smaller than I thought, but anyway it was large enough for today and they kicked me off as they were closing).
I ended my visit of Brooklyn eating an ice cream, my feet in the sand of Coney Island Beach.
